It took Lashinda Demus of the United States 52.77 seconds to run the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics. A year after that decision, and 12 years after the race, she is still waiting to receive her gold medal. One of her American teammates, Erik Kynard Jr., competed in the high jump at the London Games. And like Demus, he had to wait many years before being named the victor. Demus and Kynard are expected to finally receive their medals this summer during the Paris Olympics, according to officials at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee.

Or it could have been the declaration that a 17-year-old LeBron James was “The Chosen One,” 20 months before he played in his first N.B.A. For sports fans of a certain age, the memory of running to the mailbox to see what was on the cover of the latest weekly issue of Sports Illustrated is indelible. “You would get that cover and you’d be like: ‘Man, this is what happened last week. But the road has been particularly rough for Sports Illustrated, with its shrinking staff and reduced print frequency. The USOPC said it had not reviewed the complaint, but "remains committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Team USA athletes," including by eliminating abuse. USA Bobsled did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "Rather than being protected, believed, and taken seriously, Ms. Evans was subjected to investigation and degradation by the USOPC and USA Bobsled governing bodies," the lawsuit said.

USOPC said 2034 is a more desirable date than 2030 due to the 2028 Summer Olympics being held in Los Angeles. Utah's scenic capital city previously hosted the Winter Games in 2002. "This is a significant milestone for us," Fraser Bullock, CEO of the Salt Lake City's bid committee, said on the call.

But a potential ticket to Paris is an entirely different matter for him. "I always thought that we had the potential to be as big as to be on a platform like the Olympics... “We’ve never seen an athlete like Simone Biles,” Ryan said. And yet that sport was corrosive enough and abusive enough that she really had to step away for her own mental health,” added Ryan. “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being.”Biles was replaced in the all-around final by Jade Carey, who had finished ninth in the qualifying round. More than 150 athletes, including Biles, said that the former USA Gymnastics team doctor sexually abused them under the guise of providing medical treatment. “I think this just really shows the lack of leadership of USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee.”However, there is hope that a brighter future is in store for USA Gymnastics.

June 26 (Reuters) - The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is unequivocal in its support of Ukraine but will listen to any International Olympic Committee (IOC) plan to have Russian and Belarusian athletes compete as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Games. With the Olympics just a little over a year away pressure is mounting on the IOC, sporting federations, national Olympic committees and governments to make a call on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes at the Paris Games. There are mounting concerns that if Russian athletes are cleared to compete in Paris, even as neutrals, it could spark a Ukraine-led boycott of the Games. "We've been quite measured and willing to give the IOC the opportunity to explore the possibility, understanding how Russian or Belarusian athletes who are neutral, truly neutral, could compete in international competition. That does not include the Paris Olympics with a separate decision still to be taken by the IOC.

Feb 2 (Reuters) - Three former U.S. snowboarders sued their former coach, the national snowboarding federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee on Thursday alleging sexual abuse that was covered up by the two sporting bodies, court documents showed. Rosey Fletcher, Erin O'Malley and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof sued former coach Peter Foley, U.S. Ski and Snowboard (USSS), and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) in U.S. District Court for the central district of Los Angeles. The suit alleges Foley exploited his position of trust with the athletes to "coerce sexual acts through force, manipulation, emotional abuse, intimidation, and retaliation". The U.S. Olympic Committee said at that time it had followed protocol and reported the allegations to the U.S Center for SafeSport, which handles reports of sexual abuse within the Olympic movement.
CNN —Paralympic gold medalist swimmer Robert Griswold “maliciously targeted,” groomed and sexually abused a younger, intellectually disabled teammate, a civil lawsuit filed on Friday in Colorado alleges. “The USOPC observed Griswold engaging in this conduct and allowed it to continue,” the lawsuit adds. Griswold, who was born with cerebral palsy, won two gold medals at Tokyo 2020. Egbert and Griswold became roommates there, allowing the abuse to continue and intensify, the lawsuit says. Due to the “acts and omissions” of Griswold, USOPC and SafeSport, the lawsuit says, Egbert has “had to make the difficult decision to leave behind his lifelong dream,” of being a Paralympic swimmer.

Oct 18 (Reuters) - Delegations from Russia and Belarus will be permitted to attend the Association of National Olympic Committees' (ANOC) General Assembly, the organisation's Executive Council said in a statement on Tuesday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued guidance to sports governing bodies in February to remove Russian and Belarusian athletes from competition after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "The NOCs of Russia and Belarus are still recognised by the IOC and are therefore entitled to attend the ANOC General Assembly as any other recognised NOC," the statement read. The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) said on Monday it would not participate in the General Assembly, which runs from Wednesday to Friday in South Korean capital Seoul, if Russia and Belarus attended. The LOK and the NOCs of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway and Sweden appealed in a letter to acting ANOC president Robin Mitchell to reconsider the involvement of Russia and Belarus at the General Assembly.
